Custom Tote, Pencil Pouch & T-Shirt Design Class
Ages 8+

In this hands-on makerspace class, students learn how to design their own graphics in Canva, prepare them for printing, and then heat-press the finished design onto a tote bag, pencil pouch, or t-shirt. Each student leaves with a finished, wearable (or usable) item they created from start to finish.

What Students Will Learn

  • How to navigate Canva and use basic design tools (text, shapes, images, and layout)
  • Principles of simple graphic design such as color choice, spacing, and visual balance
  • How to prepare a design for printing and heat transfer
  • The process of heat-pressing a design onto fabric items
  • Basic troubleshooting and problem-solving when a design needs adjusting

Students work at their own pace with guidance, so both beginners and those with some design experience can succeed. Younger students receive extra support with the software and press, while older students can explore more advanced layout and design choices.

Missouri Homeschool Hours

This class can be logged toward Missouri homeschool requirements. Time spent can count under Fine Arts (design and visual arts), Practical Arts / Career Education (digital design tools, production process), or as part of a project-based elective. Parents can document hours based on class time plus any independent design work completed outside of class. A simple project description and photos of the finished item make documentation straightforward.

Confidence Builder for All Kids

Creating something real that they can use or wear gives students a visible sense of accomplishment. Many kids discover they are more capable with technology and design than they expected. Completing the full process—from idea on a screen to a finished physical item—builds problem-solving skills, pride in their work, and the confidence to try new creative tools. Whether a student is designing a bold graphic, a simple name, or a personal symbol, the class emphasizes that their ideas matter and that they can turn those ideas into something tangible.

The class is welcoming to all skill levels and personalities. The focus is on exploration, personal expression, and the satisfaction of making something of their own.
